Lucy switched on her camera and gestured towards the door separating the kitchen from the sitting room. âWant to head through to the main room first? We had a pretty good EVP session in there last night. We might get some more voices.â
âGood idea.â
The three girls moved into the sitting room, which seemed drab and gloomy with the curtains closed and the fire unlit. There wasnât a lot of natural light coming through anywhere, and it felt like the house had been trapped in shadow since they got there. It was no wonder the hotel and breakfast hadnât lasted very long.
âOkay, weâre recording,â Lucy said, holding out the EVP device towards the room.
âIs there anyone here who would like to speak with us?â Avery started, leading the questions. âWeâd like to talk with you, if youâd let us.â
They stayed quiet for a few minutes, looking around the room.
âIs the patient from yesterday still here?â She continued, hoping the doctor wasnât around instead. âWe didnât finish our conversation.â
Caroline asked a few more questions about the Asylum and what it was like back then, and they played back the recording to see if they caught any voices.
âThere, I hear something!â Lucy blurted as the audio crackled slightly and a voice that belonged to none of them came through. âIâll play it back.â She rewound the tape again and held it closer to their ears.
In the muffled silence, a voice spoke in broken words.
âThe lady⦠is⦠unwell.â
Avery blinked, looking up at the other two. âThe lady is unwell? Is that what sheâs saying?â
Lucy nodded. âThatâs what I can hear.â She pursed her lips, playing it once more. âIt sounds like a little girlâs voice.â
Caroline agreed. âThatâs what Iâm hearing as well.â
âDo you think sheâs talking about one of the patients?â Lucy asked, her brows coming together as she listened to the audio once more. The childâs voice embedded in the static.
âMaybe,â Caroline said, feeling her stomach twist. Or one of us.
The rest of the audio had nothing else unusual, so they tried again, staying where they were in the corner of the room.
âThe girl that just spoke, are you still here? Who is unwell?â
âIs someone sick? Are you unwell?â
âCan you tell us your name?â
They waited a few minutes, then played it back again.
After the first question, they heard what sounded like a quiet sob, or a laugh. It was difficult to tell against the crackly feedback, but it didnât sound the like the child anymore.
Then, a few moments later, another voice.
âMust leave. Die later.â
The words here were clearer, coming through the static like a disembodied echo that made all of them shiver.
âIs she telling us to leave?â Lucy asked, her voice gentle even as the lines on her face creased.
Caroline said nothing. Must leave. Die later. Was she speaking about the past or the present? Was it another patient she was warning, or one of them?
âLetâs move to a different room,â Avery suggested. âIâm not liking the feeling in here.â
The others agreed, and
